Location

obj_25606Elba (from ancient Latin Ilva) is an island in Tuscany (Italy), 20 kilometres (12 mi) from the coastal town of Piombino. It is the largest island of the Tuscan Archipelago, located between the Tyrrhenian Sea and Ligurian Sea, and the third largest island in Italy after Sicily and Sardinia. Elba and the other islands of the Tuscan Archipelago are part its National Park. The French island of Corsica lies about 50 kilometres (30 mi) to the west. In Italian it is called Isola d’Elba.

Its coast stretches for 147 km and its main roads cover a total of 190 km. It has a population of about 30,000 and it is divided into 8 municipalities. You can get to Elba by ferry, the journey takes 1 hour, or by faster boats, such as hydrofoils, which take 20-30 minutes. You can also arrive by plane: Pila airport at Marina di Campo is linked to various Italian and European cities. Elba, which is loved by Italian and European tourists, has modern and well equipped tourist structures. In addition to the beautiful 10 km of sandy beaches, 4 km of pebbly beaches and 3 km of cliffs, the island has museums, sport centers, and diving centers.

How to reach the island of Elba

By car:

  • From the north: take highway A12 to Rosignano; follow the route towards Rome until you reach the exit Piombino.
  • From the south: take highway A12 Roma-Civitavecchia; follow the route towards Livorno until you reach the exit Piombino.
  • From Piombino to Portoferraio there are more then 40 Ferry boat courses a day, 60 minutes, it is advisable to book in advance.

By train:

  • The station of Campiglia Marittima, on the railway Genova-Rome, connects the port of Piombino.
  • Daily ferry boat courses from Portoferraio, Rio Marina and Porto Azzurro.
  • Weekly courses from Livorno to Portoferraio. Rapid hoover craft service between Elba and the mainland.

It is possible to reach the island directly by airplane: Marina di Campo is the international tourist airport with a runway of 1185 meters. The airport has flights to and from Pisa, Milan, Bologna, Bergamo, Lugano, Zurich, and Munich. Cabs are also available.

Transfer provided by the congress

For all registered participants and accompanying persons, the congress will provide a shuttle bus service:

  • From Pisa Airport to Piombino harbour (111 km, approx. 1.5 hours)
  • From Pisa railway station to Piombino harbour (111 km, approx. 1.5 hours)
  • From Rome Fiumicino Airport to Piombino harbour (252 km, approx. 3 hours)

The following departures will be provided on May 8th:

  • From Pisa Airport to Piombino at 3.30 pm
  • From Pisa Railway station to Piombino at 1.30 pm
  • From Fiumicino Airport to Piombino at  11.30 am, 1.30 pm and 4.00 pm
